Dry Eye Assessment & Treatment

We Diagnose Dry Eye and Provide Relief in Kelowna, BC

Man with Dry Eyes

Our eye doctors treat many patients in the Okanagan for the irritating symptoms of dry eye. Everyone experiences dry eye differently, yet the most typical symptoms include burning or stinging, itchiness, red eyes, the sensation of sand stuck in the eye, and blurry vision. The causes of dry eye are also vast, and our Kelowna eye doctors will examine your eyes to determine the cause in order to recommend the most effective treatment. We are proud to offer the latest remedies and medical devices to treat dry eye successfully.

Two Types of Dry Eye

Aqueous Deficient: This form of dry eye syndrome refers to a condition in which the lacrimal glands do not manufacture enough of the watery part of tears. As a result, ocular surface health is compromised.

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD): With MGD, oil glands are blocked, which leads to a tear composition that doesn’t contain enough fatty lipids. Without enough oils, tears evaporate too quickly and dry eye ensues.

Dry Eye Assessment

We offer an innovative, advanced method of Dry Eye Assessment in our Kelowna office, which provides a comprehensive diagnosis of every patient’s dry eye symptoms. During this specialized eye exam, we will assess the health of the Meibomian glands, tear osmolarity (salt concentration), tear film quality, and general health of the cornea. Results are forwarded to the eye care practitioner responsible for each patient. Our Kelowna Dry Eye Assessment is the most efficient and convenient way to diagnose the root of a patient’s dry eye symptoms.

Dry Eye Treatment

Depending upon what causes are responsible for your dry eye, our Kelowna eye doctors will customize the most suitable dry eye treatment plan.

Medical treatments for Aqueous Deficient Dry Eye include topical ointments and eye drops (both prescription and non-prescription), punctal plugs, hydration masks, warm compresses, Restasis©, and omega-3 supplements.

If you suffer from MGD, we may recommend manual expression of tears, lid scrubs, hydration masks, lubricating eye drops, omega-3 supplements, and LipiFlow therapy.

Exclusive Kelowna Provider of LipiFlow Therapy for Dry Eye

We are proud to be the only eye care centre in the Okanagan who offers LipiFlow Therapy by Tear Science. This breakthrough system uses thermal pulsation to enhance function of the Meibomian glands. FDA-approved, drug-free and totally safe, LipiFlow therapy takes only 10-12 minutes and is highly effective at resolving dry eye.
